The Kenwood FreeTalk radios operate in the Family Radio Service band which requires no license to operate. There are 14 channels available to all users with provisions for using 38 different CTCSS privacy tones. This radio also offers a scrambled mode for additional privacy.
With a range of approximately one mile, this radio is ideal for all outdoor activities. It is also good for neighborhood watch groups or disaster preparedness uses, the radio uses 3 AA batteries with a typical operating time of 38 hours so you can store several with your emergency supplies.

The Motorola Spirit M series radios are business band radios that require an FCC license to operate, however, since they do not use repeaters, there are no monthly fees. These radios work in the UHF band for clear communications at distances of up to 2 miles in the city and up to 5 miles in the country. All the radios in the group use 'PL' tm ² tones to reduce interference from other users in the same area. Also included are a rechargeable battery and ac adaptor.

The four channel version includes a drop in tray for recharging, as well as the ability to scan amongst the four channels.
